How to Transform a PDF into an eLearning Course
Have you ever created comprehensive training that was well received by the target audience? Congratulations on your success! Let’s not stop there. It’s time to build on that success and transform that training material into an online course so that more and more people can benefit from your knowledge and expertise. In this post, we will shed light on how to transform PDF content (training material) into an online course.
Why do trainers need to transform training content into an online course?
eLearning is the future of education. From learning organizations to individual learners, more people are inclined towards eLearning because of its accessibility, reliability, and cost effectiveness. eLearning provides a golden opportunity for trainers, teachers, and subject matter experts to apply modern instructional techniques, empowering them to share their expertise and knowledge with a variety of students across the globe. What more can a teacher ask for!
PDF and PowerPoint are the two major formats that we use for training material and/or presentation. Here are few quick steps to transform a text-based training material into an online course.
- Start the online course creation process by reviewing your content. If you have a 40-page long word document, it is advised to distribute it into small lessons. Make any required changes such as formatting, layout, spellchecks, etc. Whatever the changes are, ensure to make them before converting the word document into a PDF file (click File > Save as > PDF). If you already have the training material in a PDF format, you are good to go. For any changes in the PDF, use the Edit PDF tool options. We highly recommend checking out our PDF best practices blog for further information regarding the development of a PDF for your online course.
Pro tip: 500-750 of words makes up 4-5 minutes of online instruction.
- Once you have the PDF in hand, open the course authoring tool, such as 360training Learning Content Management System, fill in the course name and course description and upload the PDF in the course authoring software.
- Add introductory slides, learning objectives, and course instructions properly in the beginning of the course to give your course a professional touch. Your course may or may not have a final exam. It usually varies from course to course. The uploaded PDF will appear in the Support tab, and the learner can easily access and download it when they take the course.
Pro tip: Take advantage of the different built-in features of your authoring tool and enrich learner’s experience by adding interactive exercises or examples and quizzes in your courses. For example, graphs and data tables are ideal to create course activities such as drag-and-drop matching and MC tabbed scenario.
And, we’re done!
Online training provides a unique opportunity for experts to take their knowledge and transform it into a product that can be accessed anywhere in the world; however, it is the responsibility of the trainers to plan and execute the online training program in such a way that the learners understand it properly and are able to improve their performance in that area. We can’t wait to see the glorious courses you build. Happy course authoring!
