Description

"The following course is designed around Chapters 4 through 8 of the 2014 NEC.  There will be certain terms that will be revisited from earlier chapters, but predominately its focus will be on additions to the Code as well as revised articles, sections, subsections and finally subdivisions. The author has given special attention to a minute portion of code changes for several reasons.

One reason is due to the sheer number of proposed changes in the 2014 NEC which limits the capability of a single course with regards to content and scope. Additionally, the NFPA which authors the text and code changes for the NEC, “does not independently test, evaluate or verify the accuracy of any information or the soundness of any judgments contained in its codes and standards”, therefore, it is left to the installers and more importantly to the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), to interpret and apply the code.  As a result the author has selected certain code changes to not only bring meaning to the code but an understanding to the premise of the change.  Lastly, the author has selected a wide range of code changes to appeal to all electricians rather than focus primarily on one area of the Code specific to a few types of installers.

It is important to keep in mind that although the author’s point of view is an educated perspective, it is the AHJ and their interpretation of the code that an installer will have to abide by when servicing and installing.  This course is designed to offer an insight into the Code Panel’s decision making process so that an interpretation of the code and the code changes can lead to a better understanding for the installer."
 

Course Objectives

"After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Determine when a multipole snap switch can be fed by more than one circuit.
  • Understand the principle and functions of effective ground-fault current path.
  • Determine when an identified barrier is required to be securely fastened between two devices.
  • Discuss the reason(s) why 15 and 20 amp receptacles in damp and wet locations shall be listed "weather resistant."
  • Discuss why the NEC now identifies "switchgear" separately from "switchboards."
  • Identify the new term that has replaced the term "fixture," and describe the new term’s inclusion.
  • Discuss the rationale for requiring all lamp holders and luminaires to be listed, including the addition of "retrofit kits."
  • Identify labeling differences between photovoltaic (PV) DC converters.
  • Discuss the inclusion of the ID of Branch Circuits from DC Systems, as well as its application to Additional Load Calculation References.
  • Define "Major Repair Garage" and "Minor Repair Garage."
  • Identify the hazardous painting area of an aircraft hanger.
  • Define, "Operator" and "Portable Structure" with regards to carnivals, circuses, fairs, and similar events.
  • Apply the requirements from Table 250.122 when sizing bonding conductors where multiple services or separately derived systems supply portable structures.
  • State the exception to 547.5 requiring GFCI-protected receptacles in dirt confinement areas for livestock.
  • Understand the concept of Equipotential Plane and its relevance to agricultural buildings.
  • Define the revised term, "Section Sign," and demonstrate an ability to review the application of "retrofit kits" requirements.
  • Define the term, "Abandoned Supply Circuits and Interconnecting Cables" and discuss the relevance to a new install.
  • Apply the new requirements of 680.12 when servicing a pool, spa, hot tub, or fountain.
  • Apply the new requirement of equipotential bonding, during a pool installation.
  • Apply new GFCI protection requirements to pool pump motors.
  • Name the additional equipment used for photovoltaic power systems that are required to be identified and listed.
  • State the importance for connectors, lugs, or terminals that are intended for fine-stranded cables to be marked for their intended application.
  • Discuss the importance of critical operations power systems with regards to the separation of ground-fault protection.  
  • Discuss when the NEC would allow the practice of lacing with Bare Class 2 Conductors.
  • Define the term, "Communication Circuit." State why the NEC has added requirements on intersystem bonding."
