Description

This course explores the common daily events system operators plan and execute, the interaction between the system control room and the generating plant, and the challenges involved with changing load and thermal stress. Students will learn about potentially dangerous situations involved with switching operations, overvoltage limits, and severe switching overvoltages.

The course concludes with an overview of areas of system operator responsibility that directly affect the safety of personnel and proper safety procedures.

Course Objectives

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall discuss the common daily events system operators plan and execute.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall describe the interaction between the system control room and the generating plant.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall recall factors involved in changing load.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall predict the expansion or contraction of components.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall explain why power plant operators need sufficient time to meet the system operators requests.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall discuss items that are continuously monitored by the turbine supervisor equipment.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall recognize possible turbine problems when raising load.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall describe longitudinal differential expansion.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall identify methods to deal with hot start problems.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall identify potentially dangerous situations involved with switching operations.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall summarize transmission line characteristics.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall explain transient over voltages.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall define load rejection and discuss the effects.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall discuss the challenges of switching two or more lines in series.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall identify how a line can be reclosed after it has been tripped because of a fault.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall identify overvoltage limits.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall explain how load rejection causes transformer overexcitation.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall discuss the effects of severe switching overvoltages.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall describe how transformers and other equipment are protected against insulation damage due to overvoltages.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall recognize areas of system operator responsibility that directly affect the safety of personnel.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall follow switching or clearance procedures to isolate parts of the system or individual pieces of equipment.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall identify the procedures that make worksites safe for workers.
