Description

This course explores system equipment that controls system operation and governors, excitation systems, protective relays, boiler controls, automatic generation control, low tech changes, and sources of reactive power.

How control devices react to various system conditions especially abnormal conditions will also be discussed.

Course Objectives

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall differentiate between normal and abnormal operation.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall identify what causes force outages.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall describe how a system reaches an emergency state.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall define cascading outages.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall differentiate between steady system states and dynamic states.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall determine what causes a system to go into a dynamic state.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall identify how operators and control devices can approach normal conditions.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall summarize the operating modes of a power system.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall list specific conditions for each operating mode of a power system.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall predict the effect of forced outages and disturbances.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall discuss the need for governor speed droop.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall describe instances in which generators share load changes and remain in synchronism.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall recall how to restore frequency back to the desired value.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall discuss load reference setting.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall recall how loading pattern affects the ability to handle fluctuating loads.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall identify how the governor responds to speed changes.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall list the components of time lags.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall explain how time lags behave.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall explain how an imbalance can occur when a system lacks power and cannot serve the load.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall describe the loss of tie-lines that carry power into a system.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall calculate the rate of frequency decay.

Terminal Objective: The trainee shall discuss how under frequency relays work.

Enabling Objective: The trainee shall identify how frequency is restored.
