FAQs
What Are Continuing Education Requirements in California?
In California, real estate professionals are required to complete Continuing Education (CE) courses to renew their real estate licenses. The requirements include completing a specific number of hours of approved educational content, which covers various topics essential to real estate practices and ethics.
How Many CE Credits Do I Need in California?
California real estate agents must complete 45 hours of continuing education every four years to renew their licenses. For first-time renewals, the CE requirements are:
- Four separate three-hour courses in the following subjects: ethics, agency, trust fund handling, and risk management, and a three-hour course in fair housing; and
- A two-hour course in implicit bias training; and
- A minimum of 18 hours of consumer protection courses; and
- The remaining clock hours to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may relate to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.
For subsequent renewals, all licensees with a license expiration date on or after January 1, 2023, or who are renewing on a late basis after January 1, 2023, must complete 45 hours of DRE-approved CE consisting of:
- One nine-hour CE survey course that covers the seven mandatory subjects, (ethics, agency, trust fund handling, risk management, management and supervision, fair housing, and implicit bias training) OR licensees can choose to take individual courses in all of those mandatory subjects;
- A minimum of 18 hours of CE courses in the category of consumer protection; and
- The remaining clock hours to complete the 45 hours of continuing education may relate to either consumer service or consumer protection courses.
How Do I Maintain My Real Estate License in California?
To maintain your real estate license in California, you need to ensure you complete the required 45 hours of continuing education every four years, submit your renewal application, and pay the associated fees to the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) before your license expires. Additionally, staying updated with any changes in real estate laws and regulations is crucial for compliance and effective practice.
How do I know you're a California DRE-approved course provider?

How quickly can I get through my first-time renewal course?
You have to spend at least as long in a course as the credit hours it's worth. You're also limited to no more than 8 hours a day on the course material.
In other words, to finish all 45 credit hours of CE, your fastest option is 6 full-time days working through those courses.
The DRE also has limits on how many final exams you can get credit for in a day: 15 credit-hours' worth in a 24-hour period. If you take multiple exams on the same day, you need to keep an eye on the total credits, because you are responsible for monitoring your compliance to this rule.
What is the deadline for completing my continuing education courses?
Your license expires every 4 years, and you must complete your CE requirements and submit your renewal application before that time. You aren't permitted to work as a real estate agent or broker once your license expiration date has passed.
