FAQs
How fast can I get through Continuing Education courses?
New York requires you spend a minimum amount of time in a course to get the credit hours—50 minutes per credit hour.
That means to earn 22.5 credit hours, you need to spend at least 18 hours and 45 minutes actively moving through the courses.
What is the deadline for completing my continuing education courses?
Your application has to be submitted by the second anniversary of your licensure. It's important to submit on time – once your expiration passes, your ability to conduct real estate activities legally is suspended. You'll have a grace period for renewal, but you can't do business during that time.
Your renewal application has to include proof of continuing education credits. It's possible to apply for an extension for your CE, but they're only granted in specific and documented hardship circumstances (see §177.6 of your real estate law book).
How do I renew my license?
Starting 90 days before your license expires, you can find the renewal application in your licensing portal under "Manage My Licenses."
You actually have a 2-year grace period to renew your license. After that, you'll have to retake the state license exam to be reinstated. However, during that grace period, you won't be allowed to conduct real estate activities.
Aren't New York's continuing education requirements changing?
Yes. New requirements take effect on July 1, 2021.
The frequency and the total number of CE hours is staying the same: 22.5 course hours every 24 months. The number of required Fair Housing and Agency credits will also remain the same.
Two main things are changing:
- You'll have 3.5 fewer elective hours because they're adding required topics, including:
- 2.5 hours of Ethical Business Practices
- 1 hour on Legal Matters
- The CE exemption for long-time broker licensees is going away. The CE exemption for attorneys will remain.
Until July of 2021, you only need to meet the "old" requirements.
