Community Service in the Workplace

“I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.”

community outreachOne trend that is gaining popularity in the business world is the introduction of community service organizations within the business.  With the increased awareness of corporate social responsibility, businesses are doing more to help their local communities.  Providing your employees with a platform to participate in volunteer work can have several positive effects on a company and its employees, including increased employee morale and creating a positive work environment.  Not only will you experience the positive effects at your workplace, but by becoming a community partner, you will have a positive impact on society at large.  Here are several tips on how to incorporate community service within your organization:

Enlist the help of your co-workers

Form a committee that can work on laying the foundation for the community service arm of your company.  Set guidelines that clearly define how the organization will work, e.g. whether employees will complete volunteer work during or outside of work hours, how often projects will be organized or whether the company will “reimburse” employees for their volunteer work by giving additional PTO.

Contact non-profit organizations in your community and see how your company can make a difference

360training.com’s Austin office has worked on local projects including making sandwiches for a homeless shelter, donating food to the local food bank, and adopting families for the holidays.  360training.com’s Karachi and Manila office have also worked extensively with local non-profit organizations. The Manila office partnered with ABS CBN’s Bantay Kalikasan, to further its goal in protecting the La Mesa Nature Reserve.

Introduce your co-workers to the organization by organizing a launch party!

Be sure to discuss the goals, guidelines, and any additional information that is of importance during this event.  Encourage them to participate in planning and coordinating future community service events.  This will promote a sense of ownership amongst employees and drive increased participation in the organization!

Support the organization by promoting the benefits for the company

Providing employees with a platform to participate in community service projects is beneficial to an employer in several ways.  Participating in volunteer opportunities gives employees the opportunity to work on teambuilding exercises.  They will be able to utilize these skills in the workplace, resulting in an increase in productivity and effective teamwork.  Promoting community service in the workplace is also beneficial because it helps generate positive publicity for the company.  This positive publicity can also help your company recruit top talent that values the importance given to community service projects organized by the company!

Schedule community service events on a regular basis

360training.com’s community service organization, 360 in Action, plans quarterly community service events that take place at all three campuses.  Several recent events planned by 360 in Action include fundraising for victims of Typhoon Yolanda, donating essential items to the 2011 Bastrop wildfires victims, adopting families during the holiday season, making food for homeless shelters, and landscaping for a non-profit organization.  Our employees always look forward to participating in the events that each campus plans for the quarter!

Remember that it is important to give back to your community

It’s very easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks that are a part of our jobs.  However, if we make it a priority to organize community service projects and encourage our employees to participate, we will be able to play an active role in improving our communities!
