Construction and Building Inspectors

  • Entry-level education needed: High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2015 median pay (per year): $57,340
  • What they do: These inspectors make sure that residential and commercial buildings are constructed according to local and national ordinances, building codes, zoning regulations, and specific contract requirements.
  • What’s ahead: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the job outlook for construction and building inspectors is estimated to grow 8 percent over the next 7 years. Certified inspectors are expected to have the most promising employment opportunities.

Boilermakers

  • Entry-level education needed: High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2015 median pay (per year): $60,120
  • What they do: Boilermakers assemble, install, maintain, and repair boiler systems and other large tanks that contain liquids and chemicals. They also inspect boiler tanks for any defects or leaks.
  • What’s ahead: Employment for boilermakers from 2014 to 2024 is projected to be faster than the average for all occupations. BLS notes that workers who have general mechanical skills and prior welding experience are going to have the best job opportunities.

Line Installers and Repairers

  • Entry-level education needed: High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2015 median pay (per year): $61,430
  • What they do: Line workers install, maintain, and repair telecommunication cables (including fiber optics) and electrical power systems.
  • What’s ahead: The growth for line workers is estimated at 6 percent. Depending on their chosen specialization, line installers and repairers may be employed by wired telecommunications carriers or electric power generation, transmission, and distribution companies.

Web Developers

  • Entry-level education needed: Associate’s degree
  • 2015 median pay (per year): $64,970
  • What they do: Web developers create and design websites according to the needs of the client or company. Aside from the look and layout of the website, web developers are also in charge of more technical aspects, including performance, capacity, and traffic.
  • What’s ahead: BLS data show that the employment growth of web developers is expected to be around 27 percent, which is much faster than all other occupations. This high demand is positively associated with the growing popularity of mobile devices and e-commerce.

Elevator Installers and Repairers

  • Entry-level education needed: High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2015 median pay (per year): $80,870
  • What they do: They install, maintain, and repair elevators, escalators, lifts, moving walkways, and similar equipment. Elevator constructors and mechanics are also asked to troubleshoot, test, and ensure that the elevators follow building codes or comply with safety regulations.
  • What’s ahead: Based on the latest BLS data, the job outlook for elevator installers and repairers is estimated to grow at 13 percent. Jobseekers with post-secondary education in electronics are expected to have better entry-level opportunities.
