HIPAA FAQs for Individuals

Cara Pahoyo January 5, 2018 0

“HIPPA” stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which was enacted in 1996. The resulting final regulation, the Privacy Rule, was published December 28, 2000. For the first time, this rule established a set of national standards for the protection of certain health information. The Privacy Rule standards address the use and disclosure of individuals’ health information—called “protected health information” — by covered organizations.

To provide quality health care, some organizations need to access and share private medical information about their patients. But individuals’ privacy must also be protected. HIPPA provides rules and guidelines for the proper handling of protected health information. Getting the right HIPAA training from credible learning organization is key to properly implement the standards set by this law.

Individuals need to know their rights and how and when their information can be used.
