What is an Authorized Entrant?
Confined spaces include a number of different spaces such as:
-
- Sewers
- Boilers
- Fuel tanks
- Manholes
- Vaults
- Elevator pits
- Silos
- Holding tanks
- Hoppers
- Compactors
Only authorized workers or entrants who have the proper training to work in these spaces should be allowed entry. Click To Tweet
However, just because a workplace is confined does not mean that it is subject to the same safety standards as more spacious workplaces. Due to the limited space, workers who work in confined spaces face unique dangers that can prove life threatening. These spaces can be both above and below ground and may not be small. Before working in confined spaces, workers need to apply safety precautions as well as proper work practices. Safety hazards can result in serious injuries and even death. According to OSHA regulations for confined spaces, authorized entrants are duty bound to know:-
-
- the different hazards involved in a confined space
- how to use appropriate equipment
- how to leave a confined space safely
- how to communicate with authorized attendants
- how to notify attendants about hazardous work conditions in the space.
