What is Bridge Decking?

More than 800 construction workers die on the job every year due to falls. These accidents can happen in a split second while they are working on scaffolds, ladders, bridges, and other elevated work surfaces. However, those fatalities can be prevented with appropriate safety regulations.

According to OSHA, employers who are based in construction have to provide appropriate safety gear for workers who work at a height of 15 feet or more. Click To Tweet

According to OSHA, employers who are based in construction have to provide appropriate safety gear for workers who work at a height of 15 feet or more. This comes under fall protection, a broad concept that involves rules, training, procedures, and equipment systems that protect bridge workers from hazards.

There are basically 2 types of fall protection systems in bridgework:

  1. Personal safety systems that prevent workers from falling off decks
  2. Guardrails for extra support

Besides these, fall exposures can also be reduced significantly with the introduction of accelerated construction techniques.

This includes fall arrest systems that can prevent a fall after it has occurred. There are 3 main types that are important for bridge workers, namely:

  1. PFAS or Personal Fall Arrest systems
  2. Work positioning devices
  3. Safety nets

Protect your workers from fall exposure by signing them up for 360Training.com’s OSHA 10 Hour Construction Training program. The course was designed to help new construction workers learn more about their safety in the industry. This includes recognizing, avoiding, and/or preventing hazards.
