What Are Bloodborne Pathogens?
Pathogens, infectious microorganisms like bacteria or viruses, can cause life-threatening diseases and damage host health. They pose a severe health risk to employees in environments with higher exposure, similar to parasites. Bloodborne pathogens (BBPs) are pathogens found in the human bloodstream, transmitted through contact or exposure to infected blood. Other bodily fluids can also potentially transmit BBPs, depending on the pathogen's characteristics.
OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standards mention three common types of bloodborne pathogens, out of approximately 20 types. These three are Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
Bloodborne pathogens pose a significant public health threat, with 3 million annual exposures in the US. Accidental cuts in work settings often lead to blood-to-blood contact, causing infections when an employee accidentally cuts and comes into contact with infected blood.
