About this Course

The fire watch serves an important function in fire prevention, promptly reporting incidents to the fire department and providing essential information about the fire type. Fire watchers aren’t necessarily responsible for extinguishing these fires unless it is small enough for them to do so safely. The training material covers the obligations of a fire watch and the seriousness of the repercussions if those duties are not taken seriously.

Our online Fire Watch training program is aligned with OSHA training requirements and is designed to help students understand the importance of fire watchers, how to identify fire dangers, and ways to improve workplace safety.

This course is for employees and supervisors.

What You’ll Learn

This fire watch training course will teach you a variety of valuable skills. You will primarily learn how to spot fire threats, prevent fires, classify the types and characteristics of fires, and know what to do if a fire occurs. Most importantly, you will learn how to properly prepare a workplace for hot work and plan to prevent fires before the workday begins.

Fire watch duties might not apply to all workplaces. Duties will need to be tailored to your line of work. As a result, a fire watcher should thoroughly plan for potential threats before beginning work.

What is Fire Watch Certification Training?

The Fire Watch Training program teaches participants to identify and respond to potential workplace fire threats, including welding and cutting, by ensuring proper use of fire extinguishing equipment and following emergency protocols. This program aims to prevent accidents and ensure safety in the workplace. In essence, those who finish training are prepared to serve as a designated fire watch.

How does this Online Fire Watch Training Course Work?

1. You will first finish the online course, which should take 30 to 60 minutes.

2. You will then take the online exam. You do get another opportunity if you don't pass the exam the first time around.

3. Your printable certificate will be available to you as soon as you complete the exam.

How Do I Become a Fire Lookout?

Although there isn't a formal OSHA fire watch certification, 29 CFR 1915.504(c)(2)(v) mandates that fire watch staff get training. This guarantees that they can carry out their responsibilities efficiently and maintain worker safety.

Our Fire Watch training program provides you with a certificate showing you have completed the required training to become a certified fire watch professional.

Does OSHA Require Fire Watch Certification?

OSHA does not require a fire watch for all operations. However, the particular conditions under which a fire watch is required are outlined in 29 CFR 1915.504(b).

When hot work is being done and there is a chance that sparks or embers could ignite surrounding combustible items, OSHA generally mandates a fire watch. Cutting, grinding, welding, and torches are a few types of hot work.

What Are the Duties of a Fire Watch?

Any activity that produces heat, sparks, or flames that have the potential to ignite a fire or explosion is considered hot work. This covers soldering, grinding, cutting, and welding. A fire watcher may have a variety of roles; however, the following are some typical ones:

  • Hot Work - You communicate with personnel doing hot work. You also make sure the right fire extinguishers are close at hand, keep yourself updated on any work limitations, and remain vigilant during the entire operation, including breaks.
  • Stop Hot Work - You will spot potential fire hazards and will be able to stop work if needed. Additionally, you address these issues with managers and other staff members.
  • In the Event of a Fire - As a fire watch person you will be expected to extinguish small flames with proper equipment, always within the boundaries of your training. You will also raise the alarm for others and evacuate the location.
  • After Hot Work - When the hot work is done, your responsibilities don't end. After finishing, you will keep an eye on the area for at least half an hour to make sure no hidden fires are started by smoldering embers.

What's Included in Fire Watch Training?

People who complete fire watch training are equipped with the expertise necessary to identify and manage fire hazards, including:

  • Understanding the ignition sources, flammable materials, and fire-starting areas
  • Recognizing fire safety precautions, such as appropriate storage, well-lit pathways, and safe work procedures
  • Identifying the various fire types, Class A, B, C, D, and K, and the proper extinguishers for each
  • Recognizing fire response procedures, including warning others, using extinguishers, and evacuating
  • Being aware of "hot work" specifications and practices, such as brazing, cutting, and welding
  • Knowing your fire watch responsibilities, including safety assurance, incident reporting, and monitoring

Who Needs Fire Watch Training?

To perform operations known as "hot work", such as welding or cutting, employees need specialized training. Fire Watch training teaches workers to detect and respond effectively to fires. "Hot work" is reserved for industries with high fire risk, such as construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, healthcare facilities, and maritime. If you work in an industry that is considered “hot work” then you need Fire Watch training.

Supervisors and managers must also understand fire watch policies, responsibilities, and how to ensure a safe work environment during hot work.

How Long Does Fire Watch Training Last?

In order to effectively cover all necessary information, Fire Watch online training generally lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours. However, all courses make it possible to learn at your own pace.
