Why Do I Need Workplace Infectious / Contagious Diseases Training?
Regulations are in place for the safety of workers. These regulations include infectious disease training for many workplaces, and often before a worker can begin on-the-job. Ongoing training prevents the risk of workers contracting diseases and aids in maintaining a safe work environment. Along with initial training, refresher courses are also commonly required. Standards vary from industry to industry, but employees are often required to complete refreshers at yearly or multi-yearly intervals. Employees are not exempt from this requirement by age or experience.
What is an Infectious Disease?
Infectious diseases are illnesses caused by infectious microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, parasites, and even fungi. Certain diseases can spread much faster or much easier than others, which makes safe practices and prevention vital for worker safety. These diseases can spread between persons, either directly or indirectly, and can sometimes even be spread by animals and insects.
Are Viruses Diseases?
Rather than being a disease itself, viruses cause many infectious diseases when they multiply within the body, and cause illnesses like the common cold, influenza, and others. Some viruses severely compromise the body’s health, and cause more severe illnesses like HIV/AIDS, smallpox, and Ebola.
How Does COVID-19 Spread?
COVID-19 can spread both through contact and respiratory droplets. Contact includes touching an object or surface that has the virus on it and then touching your mouth, nose, or even your eyes. COVID-19 spreads more often from one person to another through respiratory droplets when a person coughs, sneezes, or even talks too closely to another person.
Does Wearing a Mask Prevent the Transmission of Disease?
Masks can prevent the spread of some diseases that are passed through respiratory droplets, though some diseases require closed system breathing apparatuses. When wearing a mask, it is important to use the proper grade of mask, as well as wear it properly. Some common mistakes include repeatedly touching the mask, improper fit/use, and reusing after leaving a potential contamination field. All these mistakes eliminate or increase the risk of infection. Consult your doctor before deciding to wear a mask if you have concerns or a medical condition that may make the wearing of a mask for a long period of time dangerous.
