What is a Knuckle Boom Crane? 

Boom cranes are hydraulic-powered tools that can reach both vertically and horizontally. They come in two types: telescopic booms and knuckle booms. Knuckle booms, also known as articulating booms, are designed for platforms that need to reach up and over obstacles, allowing workers to work around fixtures, walls, and machinery while maintaining a stable work platform. 

What is it Used For? 

Knuckle boom cranes are widely used in industries like oil, forestry, and construction due to their ease of maneuverability and precision in lifting and extending items. They fit through standard doorways and are ideal for tight workspaces, allowing workers to crane themselves or items up, over, and out with unprecedented precision. 

Why is Safety Training Important? 

Workplace hazards, such as dangerous machinery and physical strain, pose a significant threat to employees at any construction site. Safety is often overlooked during onboarding and is rarely discussed post-employment.  

OSHA reports daily incidents involving broken bones, deep cuts, loss of hearing, and death, with workplace incidents causing over 5,000 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries annually. It is crucial for employees to be aware of these hazards. 

How Often Should a Knuckle Boom Be Inspected? 

A knuckle boom crane should be inspected at the beginning of each workday or shift.  

Is It Okay to Hoist Personnel Up Using the Knuckle Boom? 

Never lift personnel up using a boom lift, it is totally unsafe to do so.    

How Can I Avoid Knuckle Boom Tipovers? 

Tipovers can be avoided by understanding the knuckle boom's loading capacity as well as the tipping points. Make sure the torque on the crane's side is larger than the leverage. Also, before using the knuckle boom, make sure your outriggers are properly adjusted. 

Am I Required to Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) When Operating a Knuckle Boom? 

Employers determine PPE requirements for operating a knuckle boom, but it's recommended to wear a hard hat and reflective vest at all times.
