About this Course

What is Lockout/Tagout Safety in the Workplace Training?

This course covers OSHA's Control for Hazardous Energy and Lockout and Tagout (LOTO) standards.  These procedures exist to ensure safety during equipment servicing and maintenance.  They prevent you from being injured by the unexpected or start-up of machines or the sudden release of stored energy.

You'll learn the required elements of energy control procedures and their purpose, as well as the responsibilities of people involved with lockout/tagout. We'll cover training and inspection requirements, the steps for safely applying energy shutdown, and the basic requirements for lockout/tagout devices.

Who should take Lockout/Tagout Safety in the Workplace?

If you need to understand how to perform lockouts or tagouts during equipment maintenance, this course is for you.

What Does OSHA Require for OSHA Lockout/Tagout Training?

OSHA requires that employees are trained on lockout/tagout procedures to ensure that they know, understand, and can follow the proper procedures to safeguard themselves and others from unexpected energization or startup of machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance activities.

This OSHA LOTO training must cover at least three key areas:

  • The recognition of applicable hazardous energy sources in the workplace.
  • The type and magnitude of the energy available in the workplace.
  • The methods and means necessary for energy isolation and control.

Employers must certify that training has been accomplished and is being kept up to date. Training must be provided to all employees covered by the standard. It must be revised whenever there is a change in their job assignments, a change in machines, equipment, or processes that present a new hazard, or when there is a change in the energy control procedures.

How Do I Get LOTO Certification?

Lockout/tagout certification can typically be obtained through completing a training program that meets OSHA's LOTO training requirements OSHA-authorized training providers, such as 360training often offer these programs.

To get certified:

  • Enroll in a LOTO training course that is recognized and meets OSHA standards.
  • Complete the course, which usually includes both theoretical and practical components.
  • Pass any required assessments or exams to demonstrate your understanding of LOTO practices and procedures.

Upon successful completion, participants receive a certificate indicating they have been trained in LOTO procedures according to OSHA standards.

How Long Is LOTO Training?

The duration of lockout/tagout training can vary depending on the provider and the depth of the course. An online lockout tagout training typically ranges from one hour for basic awareness training to a few hours for comprehensive training that covers a wide range of machinery and industry-specific scenarios.

How Long Is LOTO Certification Good For?

OSHA does not specify a fixed validity period for LOTO certification. However, it requires that employers must review their energy control program at least annually to ensure that procedures and the training of employees are up to date.

This implies that retraining (and possibly recertification, depending on the employer's policy or practice) should be conducted regularly to maintain proficiency in LOTO procedures.
