About This Course

This Mining Electrical Safety course will educate you on the unique safety concerns of working with or around electricity in a mine.

You’ll learn the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)’s electrical safety regulations and training requirements, designed to keep workers safe. We’ll introduce you to the electrical hazards that may be present in mines, like electric shock, arc flash, fire, and explosion. Finally, you’ll learn the electrical safety best practices that reduce or eliminate these hazards, thereby preventing electrical injuries and fatalities.

Mining Electrical Safety is an important course for all mine operators, supervisors, safety personnel, and other mine workers. If you work at a mine site, you have a responsibility to ensure that MSHA standards are being observed at all times. This course will familiarize you with the standards and regulations you’ll need to follow when working with or around on-site electricity.

What Is Mining Electrical Safety Certification?

While an official “Mining Electrical Safety Certification” technically does not exist, you may be required to complete training on electrical safety specific to mining.

Successful completion of our Mining Electrical Safety course means you’ve demonstrated adequate knowledge of the electrical hazards you may encounter in a mine, the MSHA regulations and requirements that apply, and the best practices for working around mining electrical hazards without risking your health or safety.

What's Included in This Mining Electrical Safety?

When you pass the final exam for our Mining Electrical Safety course, you’ll immediately receive a certificate of completion that you can print and download. It’s recommended that you save a copy for your records.

Who Needs Mining Electrical Safety Certification?

While certification is technically not the right term, this 2-hour course covers MSHA’s standards for electrical safety, Parts 46 and 48. It can be used to fulfill a portion of mandatory new miner training.

How Many Modules Are in the Mining Electrical Safety Course?

Our Mining Electrical Safety course has a total of 44 modules in four sections: Introduction, Mining Electrical Safety Overview, Regulations and Requirements, and Mining Electrical Safety Best Practices.

How Many Questions Are in the Mining Electrical Safety Course Final Exam?

The number of questions on the final exam may vary, but they will be in multiple-choice format and based on the course content. You’ll be tested on key concepts such as MSHA and NFPA regulations, electrical hazards like arc flash and shock, lockout/tagout procedures, grounding requirements, PPE use, and electrical safety best practices for both surface and underground mining operations.

How Long Does Mining Electrical Safety Certification Last?

When you take Mining Electrical Safety as part of your MSHA New Miner Training, your certificate of completion will remain valid for 36 months. As long as you accumulate 12 months of work experience in that time, you are considered an “experienced miner” with refresher requirements that differ from the New Miner Training curriculum. If you don’t get the correct amount of work experience before your certificate expires, you’ll need to repeat the course.
