About This Course

Accidents involving powered haulage systems remain one of the leading causes of injuries and fatalities in underground mining. Heavy machinery, confined spaces, and limited visibility make safe operation essential. This MSHA Underground Mining Powered Haulage Safety (Part 48) online course provides the knowledge miners need to recognize hazards and follow safe operating procedures. Learners will review best practices for underground vehicle operation, equipment inspection, maintenance, and safe traffic control.

Designed for operators, supervisors, safety personnel, and all individuals who work with or around powered haulage, this course aligns with MSHA regulations under 30 CFR Part 57 and Part 75, which outline the rules and requirements for underground haulage safety.

Upon completion, learners receive an instant, printable certificate of completion. Mine operators must maintain an MSHA-approved training plan and document all training using MSHA Form 5000-23, as required by 30 CFR §48.23 and §48.28.

This course is offered in partnership with Compliance Training Online™, a division of 360training™ company.

What is MSHA 5000-23 Training?

There isn’t an official “MSHA 5000-23 training.” MSHA Form 5000-23 is the official record of training, not a standalone credential. It’s the form your mine operator uses to document that you completed required training under 30 CFR Part 48. Upon finishing your course, miners receive a certificate that their operator will transfer to the 5000-23 form for regulatory recordkeeping.

What Is a Haulage System in Mining?

A haulage system in mining refers to the equipment and methods used to transport mined material, equipment, and personnel within an underground operation.

Powered haulage systems can include conveyors, shuttle cars, locomotives, hoists, trolleys, and trucks, all of which require strict safety controls. These systems pose serious risks due to heavy machinery movement in confined spaces, making training in safe operation, inspection, and maintenance essential for preventing accidents in the workplace.

How Often Should I Take MSHA Underground Mining Powered Haulage Safety Training?

MSHA training under Part 48 must be completed initially and refreshed every 12 months. The Powered Haulage Safety course may support task or refresher training within an MSHA-approved plan.
