This course is offered in partnership with Compliance Training Online™, a 360training™ company.
Every mining operation follows an MSHA-approved training plan, customized to meet its unique requirements and operational standards. This 24-hour online course package can supplement a company’s MSHA-approved training plan, fulfilling part of the annual refresher requirement for 30 CFR 46.8, and providing miners and contractors with current safety training. While our courses are structured to support Part 46 annual refresher needs, the specific applicability may vary based on individual training plans. It is the responsibility of the mine site operator to ensure MSHA compliance and verify that all employees complete the training outlined in their approved plan.
Who Should Take MSHA New Miner Part 46 Safety Training?
Our package is for new surface miners and surface mining contractors. This includes miners who work in surface nonmetal mines that are designated as shell dredging, sand, gravel, surface stone, surface clay, colloidal phosphate, and surface limestone mines.
Though they are not specifically mentioned in Part 46, operations that produce marble, granite, sandstone, slate, shale, traprock, kaolin, cement, feldspar, and lime should also complete the program.
FAQs
What is MSHA 24-Hour New Miner Certification?
The MSHA 24-Hour New Miner training is designed to help surface miners, supervisors, and other mine workers understand critical safety practices and hazard recognition required by MSHA standards. Although MSHA doesn’t issue formal certification, this course fulfills essential training requirements by covering key safety topics. By completing this course, you’ll gain valuable knowledge on how to identify hazards, prevent accidents, and respond to emergencies, supporting a safer work environment in surface mining operations.
What's Included in MSHA 24-Hour New Miner Training?
This course provides comprehensive coverage of essential topics related to surface mining safety. It includes training on hazard identification, accident prevention strategies, and emergency response procedures specific to the surface mining environment. The curriculum focuses on equipping participants with best practices to recognize and mitigate risks that commonly lead to mining accidents, thereby supporting compliance with MSHA safety standards and helping workers stay informed and prepared.
Who Needs MSHA 24-Hour New Miner Certification?
The MSHA 24-Hour New Miner training is intended for anyone involved in surface mining operations, including mine operators, supervisors, safety personnel, and general surface mine workers. Whether you are new to the field or have years of experience, this course provides critical insights into health and safety factors, emergency protocols, and best practices for preventing accidents. This training is essential for anyone who needs to understand the specific risks associated with surface mining to ensure a safer workplace.
How Long Does MSHA 24-Hour New Miner Certification Last?
The MSHA 24-Hour New Miner training provides valuable safety knowledge, but it does not issue a formal certification with a set expiration. However, MSHA regulations, specifically 30 CFR Part 46, require surface miners to complete annual refresher training to maintain safety compliance. This course can serve as part of your annual training requirements, but additional hours may be needed to fulfill the full 8-hour refresher mandated by MSHA.
Is This Training for Workers In Underground Mines?
This course is NOT appropriate for coal or other underground miners since 30 CFR Part 46 applies only to non-metal/non-coal surface mine operations. While some Part 46 training topics may apply to Part 48 training, you will need to seek Part 48 training from an MSHA-approved trainer.
Even if you work only on surface operations of a metal or coal mine, you are required to complete Part 48 training.
If you are unsure about what training you require, please request information from MSHA.
What Should I Do After I Complete My Part 46 New Miner Training?
Once all courses are completed and certificates downloaded, download and complete the MSHA 5000-23 Certificate of Training Form on the MSHA website. You will need to add your mine or independent contractor name, their identification number, and the name of the competent person who can verify the training you received.
Generally, the person signing the form is the Mine Operator or a person acting on behalf of the operator. For example, a company safety official, a trainer employed or contracted by the operator, or a cooperative instructor (such as a state grantee).
360training does NOT sign the 5000-23 form.
