About This Course
Underground mining, and the surface areas of underground mines, presents numerous health and safety hazards, so even experienced miners need annual refresher training. This course presents an overview of Part 48 refresher requirements, covering basic safety training regulations for underground work, emergency response procedures, and how to recognize and avoid mining hazards. It also reviews the rights and responsibilities of miners.
This refresher is designed to retrain experienced miners who have at least one year of mine-site experience. Refresher topics address changes at the mine that could adversely affect health or safety, reinforcing safe practices across areas such as ground control, movement of people and materials, miners’ rights, and more.
This course can be used within your company’s MSHA-approved training plan to, in part, satisfy the annual refresher requirements of 30 CFR 48.28; site-specific hazard and task training may also be required by your mine operator. Your company must have an approved training plan per 30 CFR §48.23, and the mine-site operator must record and certify training on MSHA Form 5000-23 (or a form containing the information specified in §48.23(b)) upon completion of all required aspects of training.
This course is offered in partnership with Compliance Training Online™, a division of 360training™ company.

Who Needs to Take the MSHA Part 48 Refresher Training Each Year?
All experienced miners working in underground mines or the surface areas of underground mines must complete MSHA Part 48 refresher training every 12 months. This annual requirement helps miners stay aware of current safety procedures and any changes at the mine that could adversely affect health or safety.
How Does My Employer Know I’ve Completed My MSHA Part 48 Refresher Training?
After completing this course and passing the final exam, you’ll receive a downloadable certificate of completion for your records. Your mine-site operator is responsible for recording all training on an MSHA Form 5000-23, or an equivalent form as outlined in 30 CFR §48.23(b). If you have any issues accessing or downloading your certificate, visit our Certificates & Credits page for help.
Can Underground and Surface Miners Use the Same Online MSHA Part 48 Refresher Training Program?
No. Underground and surface miners have different training requirements under MSHA Part 48. This Underground Mining Refresher course is specifically designed for miners who work underground or in the surface areas of underground mines. A separate course, the MSHA Part 48 Subpart B Surface Mining Refresher, covers training for surface miners working at underground sites.
