OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training Overview

Our OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training course provides safety managers, supervisors, and team leaders with the in-depth knowledge needed to create and maintain a safer workplace. You’ll learn how to navigate the key OSHA policies, procedures, and standards outlined in 29 CFR 1910, giving you the tools to identify hazards and help reduce workplace risks. This course is part of the broader OSHA 30-Hour Training program, which covers both construction and general industry to meet the needs of any worksite.

Key takeaways include:

  • How to build, manage, and improve workplace health and safety programs
  • Employer responsibilities and worker rights under OSHA
  • How to recognize and control common hazards, such as machine guarding, electrical risks, bloodborne pathogens, and more
  • OSHA standards and commonly accepted safety practices for hazard communication, emergency response, and industrial hygiene

This course is NOT for the construction industry. There is a separate OSHA 30-Hour Construction course that addresses the specific standards for that industry.

The OSHA 30-hour General Industry Outreach Training course has been reviewed and authorized by OSHA for online distribution. OSHA-authorized Outreach training courses are provided in partnership with 360training.

While OSHA 30 is not federally required, it is commonly taken by those responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring their organization meets OSHA 29 CFR 1910 standards. What Is the Difference Between OSHA 30-Hour Construction and General Industry?

There are several types of OSHA 30 courses that are designed for specific "industries." The most common "industries" are Construction and General Industry.

OSHA 30 General Industry focuses on §1910, which is the standard that applies to everyone when there's no "industry-specific" rule to override it. It's often recommended for manufacturing, warehousing, and similar high-risk jobs. General Industry training is generally not the best choice for anyone subject to the safety rules specific to construction, maritime, aircraft, mining, and nuclear facilities.

OSHA 30 Construction focuses on the construction-specific standards in §1926, as well as the parts of §1910 that apply. OSHA 30 Construction is better for anyone that regularly performs construction or demolition work.

How Long Are the Individual Modules on OSHA 30-Hour General Industry?

OSHA sets minimum module lengths that vary by topic, but instructors are allowed to devote extra time to topics as long as they meet the other curriculum requirements. As a result, module lengths will vary from course to course.

All modules in OSHA 30-hour General Industry must be at least 30 minutes long. Some topics, like Introduction to OSHA and Managing Safety and Health, must be at least 2 hours in length. Other topics, like Walking and Working Surfaces, are required to be at least an hour.

Is OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training Required?

OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training is not federally required by OSHA. However, it may be mandated by state or local laws, city ordinances, employers, unions, or specific job sites, particularly for supervisors, workers in safety oversight roles, or those working on government or large-scale projects. Always confirm requirements with your employer or local and state regulations to ensure you meet any applicable obligations.

What Jobs Can I Get With OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training?

OSHA 30-Hour General Industry training is a credential that supports eligibility and career advancement. It does not guarantee employment, and employers may still require relevant experience, additional certifications, or role-specific qualifications.

That said, it is commonly valued or required for roles such as:

  • Safety coordinator or safety officer
  • Warehouse or distribution supervisor
  • Facilities manager
  • Manufacturing or operations team lead
  • EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) specialist
  • Compliance or risk management roles

Beyond opening doors to these positions, OSHA 30 training may also improve your employability and promotion potential within your current organization, and can be complemented by additional safety credentials or role-specific training to further strengthen your profile.

Can I Finish OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training Faster?

No. OSHA sets minimum time requirements for the OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Outreach course, including both the total number of required hours and daily time limits that cannot be reduced or bypassed. While you cannot shorten the overall course length, you can complete it as efficiently as the program allows by progressing consistently through the modules and staying within the daily limits set by the OSHA Outreach Training Program.

How Can I Get a Refund for My OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Course?
