Confined Space (Competent Person) Online Training

According to OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926.32(f), a competent person is someone who can identify existing and predictable hazards in the workplace and has the authority to take prompt corrective measures to remove them. This combination of knowledge and authority is what distinguishes a competent person from other workers.

This training includes an in-depth look at how to identify, evaluate, and control hazards in confined spaces. It addresses OSHA requirements under 29 CFR 1910, 1926, and 1915, the differences between permit-required and non-permit spaces, hazard recognition, atmospheric testing, ventilation methods, rescue planning, and the specific responsibilities of a competent person. A certificate of completion is also included and is awarded immediately upon passing the final exam.

While “certification” is often used as shorthand for completing competent person training, OSHA does not issue an official certification for Confined Space Competent Person training. This course is recommended for anyone responsible for assessing confined space hazards, authorizing entry, overseeing work, or enforcing OSHA compliance. That can include safety managers, foremen, supervisors, and workers in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and utilities.

Technically, competent person certification doesn’t have a set expiration date assigned by OSHA. However, employers are responsible for ensuring skills and knowledge remain current. Many require refresher training every one to two years, or sooner if job duties, regulations, or workplace hazards change.

• Has limited or restricted ways of entry or exit (for example, tanks, vessels, silos, storage bins, hoppers, vaults, and pits).
