About this Course
Working around radio towers can be dangerous due to the potential exposure to radiofrequency (RF) radiation. Training can help significantly reduce these risks. Those who finish training will walk away with a comprehensive understanding of RF radiation uses, health and safety issues, and best practices.
Who Needs this Course?
This course is essential for professionals who work with or around radio frequency (RF) radiation sources and need to understand the potential hazards and safety measures. Key roles that will benefit include:
- Telecommunications Technicians
- Broadcast Engineers
- Maintenance Technicians
- Industrial Workers
- Utility Workers
- Construction Workers
- Antenna Installers
- Field Engineers
- Safety Managers
- Wireless Network Technicians
Our RF Awareness training satisfies OSHA guidelines and includes the most current and up-to-date content. This course includes intermittent practice quiz questions to prepare for the final exam included in the course. In addition to the final exam, this course also includes a checklist for employers to use when administering a practical exam as required by OSHA.

What You’ll Learn
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will learn how to identify safe operating distances, employ protective measures, and recognize the signs of overexposure to RF radiation in the workplace. Training will cover how to adhere to safety protocols, ensuring that workers are aware of emergency procedures and equipped to respond effectively in case of unexpected incidents on or near radio towers.
FAQs
What Is Radiofrequency?
Electromagnetic radiation, including radio waves and microwaves, is a form of electromagnetic energy emitted by transmitting antennas, and is referred to as radiofrequency (RF) energy or radiation.
Anyone who works on or near transmission towers may be exposed to dangerous radiation if they are not fully protected and trained. Radio waves, despite their invisibility, can be hazardous. Radio frequency exposure may have long-term consequences.
What Is RF Awareness?
RF awareness refers to an understanding and recognition of the potential hazards associated with radiofrequency radiation. RF energy has several commercial and industrial applications. It powers our mobile phones and delivers radio and television programming to our homes. However, RF radiation poses substantial health risks, particularly to people who work near antenna and tower sites. RF awareness training will teach you about the potential hazards of exposure and how to avoid them.
Why Do You Need RF Training?
Workers exposed to radiofrequency radiation, like those who work around radio towers, cell phone base stations, or medical equipment, need proper training to understand the potential risks and how to stay safe. Radio waves' frequency, field strength, proximity to the source, and exposure duration can impact health. Prolonged exposure can cause RF burns, sickness or disease, including wheezing, inflammation, headaches, glioma risk, and potentially brain cancer.
Aside from illness, there are also physical risks associated with working with radio towers. These transmitting towers can be tall, such as antennas put on top of buildings, or soaring, such as towers taller than 2,000 feet (609.6 m). This puts workers at risk for falls, one of the covered topics included in this course.
RF training courses are offered for individuals who need a basic understanding of RF concepts as well as those who work in the field of radio frequency communications. Our RF course is continually updated with the latest information.
Does OSHA Require RF Awareness Training?
OSHA does not currently have a specific standard requiring RF awareness training for all workers. However, there are some circumstances where training might be necessary under existing OSHA regulations. State plans are expected to develop and execute laws that are as effective as OSHA’s, although with different or more strict criteria.
How Is Radiofrequency Energy Used?
The most common use of RF energy is in telecommunications services. Radio and television broadcasting, cellular telephones, personal communications services (PCS), pagers, telephones, business radio, radio communications for police and fire departments, amateur radio, microwaves, and satellite communications all use RF energy.
Radar is a crucial technology used in air traffic control, military surveillance, and transportation speed limit enforcement. Industrial heaters and sealers generate high levels of RF radiation, heating objects like microwave ovens. These tools are used in food processing, wood bonding, shoe sealing, and plastic component molding. RF radiation is also used in medical treatments.
