Skid Steer Online Training

A skid steer, sometimes known as a skid loader or wheel loader, is a small, multipurpose type of construction equipment that is most used for excavation.  

Skid steers are versatile machinery that can do a wide range of tasks with a single attachment. While the standard attachment is a bucket, its arms can be attached to a range of tools for a variety of jobs. It is also lightweight and easily maneuverable in tight spaces. Skid steers are commonly used for clearing snow, excavating, construction, landscaping, and trenching and digging, making them a versatile and efficient tool for various industries. 

Heavy machinery operators are legally required to complete training before operating a skid steer, with specific requirements for refresher training. Although not all equipment has identical OSHA training requirements, it is still a good idea to follow these rules.

This online, self-paced course includes an overview of skid steer and track loader safety. You’ll learn about machine anatomy and controls, pre-shift inspections, stability concepts (like center of gravity and capacity), safe operating techniques and situational awareness, hazard recognition and avoidance, using attachments, mounting/dismounting and restraint systems, plus communication, pedestrian safety, and travel procedures. Upon successful completion, the course includes a downloadable and printable certificate of completion for your records. 

Technically, there’s no official “skid steer certification.” That term is commonly used as shorthand for completing operator training and receiving a certificate of completion. OSHA expects employers to ensure operators are trained and competent before using powered equipment. This training is especially useful for skid steer operators and anyone who works around heavy machinery and needs to understand the risks. 

Because there’s no formal certification, there’s no single expiration date. Employers must make sure operators remain competent, which can include refresher training when job duties change, equipment is updated, or after an incident. 

The course covers important safety topics, but it’s designed to be clear and easy to understand for all learners. How difficult it may be will depend on your prior experience and your commitment to the material. It’s self-paced and includes interactive practice quizzes to support understanding.
