What is Workplace First Aid Training?

Workplace First Aid training is a program to help employees respond effectively to emergencies. Courses like these ensure individuals are prepared to stabilize injured persons on-site, potentially saving lives and improving outcomes until professional help arrives. It also covers safety requirements emphasized by OSHA and MSHA for high-risk or remote work environments.

What’s Included in Workplace First Aid Training?

This training covers essential first aid skills, such as assessing injuries, stabilizing victims, and responding to workplace emergencies. It ensures participants understand how to act quickly and efficiently in various situations to promote safety and prevent further harm.

Who Needs Workplace First Aid Training?

Employers, managers, supervisors, and employees may benefit from workplace first aid training. This course is particularly important for teams in remote or high-risk environments where immediate professional help may not be readily available. Having trained individuals on-site can help create a safer workplace for everyone.

How Long Does Workplace First Aid Training Last?

The Workplace First Aid training provides valuable injury response knowledge, but it does not issue a formal certification with a set expiration. However, MSHA regulations, specifically 30 CFR Part 46 and Part 48, require surface miners to complete annual refresher training to maintain safety compliance. This course may support employer-led safety training programs.

While OSHA does not suggest a recertification schedule, the general duty clause in 29 U.S. Code 654 requires every employer to "furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm." Periodic first aid training reduces the risk of fatal injury.

This course is NOT appropriate for coal or other underground miners since 30 CFR Part 46 applies only to non-metal/non-coal surface mine operations. While some Part 46 training topics may apply to Part 48 training, you will need to seek Part 48 training from an MSHA-approved trainer.

Even if you work only on surface operations of a metal or coal mine, you are required to complete Part 48 training.

If you are unsure about what training you require, please request information from MSHA.
