Handling an Active Shooter

Personal Connections

Unfortunately, workplace violence is becoming a more realistic threat in the United States. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), an average of 551 homicides in the workplace were reported from yearly by US companies from 2006 to 2010. Over the same time period, an average of 408 of the workplace homicides every year were the results of an Active Shooter.

What is an Active Shooter?

An Active Shooter is an individual who is in the act of attempting to kill or harm people with a firearm in a confined or public place. In 2010, 78% of all workplace violence resulting in death were caused by an Active Shooter.

The motives behind violence at the workplace may vary, but there are four types of situations which are the most likely to lead to an Active Shooter scenario. These are criminal acts, angry customers, worker-on-worker altercations, and violence associated with a personal relationship. While any type of workplace violence is serious, Active Shooters with motives relating to personal relationships are often the most dangerous due to the intensity of the emotional connection between the shooter and the victim of the crime. Almost a quarter of all violence at work is related to personal relationships.

What is the Workplace Safety Active Shooters Training course?

The Workplace Safety Active Shooters Training course gives participants the knowledge they need to respond effectively, calmly, and quickly to an Active Shooter incident. It also teaches them how to respond to any other type of violent incident which takes place in the workplace. Employees will learn how to identify signs of escalating violence, and different ways of working together to protect themselves, their coworkers, and others in the area. After the course, employees will be better able to assist law enforcement by identifying potential Active Shooters before any violence occurs. They also learn how to provide accurate and critical information to allow law enforcement to control a violent incident.

The Workplace Safety Active Shooters Training course provides everything your company’s employees need to know about handling an Active Shooter. The online course is simple for even a small HR department to present to a group during a training session. As an alternative, the course may be taken individually, to accommodate the most demanding schedules easily.

The Workplace Safety Training course was developed by Lou Miranda. He is a security expert who served as a US Marines Security Director, and is currently certified as an Arizona Terrorism Liaison Officer, and a FEMA Instructor on Workplace Violence.

Who can benefit from the program?

The Workplace Safety Active Shooters Training program is an ideal first responder online course for your office security team, but everyone in your company can benefit from the program. It would be better for your company if more people can identify an escalating encounter from personal relationships. It will greatly help if they are aware of the procedures to deal with such violent incidents.
