Techniques to Handle the Compressed Gas Cylinders Properly
The safe handling process of compressed gas cylinders begins with delivery. The moment all the cylinders have been examined and accepted from the retailer, they need to be secured in a vertical position for them to be transported to destination site.
Gas cylinders must be carried and moved with movable carts specifically designed for that work.
- The carts must be placed adjacent to the cylinder to reduce the physical movement of the cylinders.
- The person responsible for handling them should then carefully put the cylinders on the cart and use the chains or straps on the cart to securely fasten them. This helps to avoid sliding, tilting or falling.
- Even for a short distance, carts must be used. They should never be dragged or rolled in a horizontal position. Also, you must lift the cylinders by holding their caps or using magnets.
Things Needed to Store the Compressed Gas Cylinders Properly
- Make sure the tanks are stored in a well-ventilated and weatherproof area, allowed to be stored standing vertically. The area should be free from combustible substances, sources of ignition or concentrated heat. Ensure that the gas is stored as per the hazard classification.
- Incompatible gas types must be stored in separate areas. For instance, flammable gas must not be stored in the same area with oxidizing gases. The separation of incompatible gas cylinders can be made possible by open space, partitioning the area with fireproof material, or storing them in an appropriate storage facility.
- Given that metal cylinders are good conductors of electricity, they should be stored in a place free from electric circuits and flame sparks. Avoid putting the cylinders close to electrical conductors like metal pipes that could carry the electric current.
- As a safety measure, it is not good to store the cylinders in places that exceed over 125 F degrees. This could result in an explosion since the gases will expand once they heat, and the pressure in the cylinder will increase. On top of that, these cylinders must not be stored in areas with direct sunlight. Most people tend to ignore the fact that direct sunlight will increase the temperature of the cylinders to potentially unsafe levels
