NFPA stands for National Fire Protection Association, and OSHA relies on the NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the workplace as a way to protect workers from severe electrical hazards.

Our NFPA 70E training teaches you about the different ways to recognize and react to electrical dangers, which helps you prevent accidents and deaths relating to arc flashes, shock, and electrocution.

This online course will help you stay safe on the job while also ensuring you stay in compliance with OSHA 1910 Subpart S and OSHA 1926 Subpart K.

Who Should Take NFPA 70E Training?

FAQs

How Long Is NFPA 70E Training?

Neither NFPA nor OSHA set a minimum length for NFPA 70E training. According to the National Fire Protection Association, "the type and extent of the training provided shall be determined by the risk to the employee."

It's common for NFPA 70E courses to be 4 to 8 hours long. People who work directly with electrical equipment will need more extensive training than workers that don't.

How Often Is NFPA 70E Training Required?

Workers must refresh and update their NFPA 70E training at least every three years.

Additionally, workers need NFPA 70E training:

  • After deficiencies are found during an annual audit or routine supervision,
  • When new equipment is added, and/or
  • After a change in job duties.

Who Needs NFPA 70E Training?

OSHA §1910 Subpart S includes training requirements that apply to both "qualified" and "unqualified" persons, but they make a distinction between the two groups. Supervisors of both types of workers must be trained, as well.

NFPA 70E training is required for any worker that faces a risk of electric shock that is not reduced to a safe level by electrical installation requirements. At minimum, these workers must be "trained and familiar" with safety-related work practices in §1910 Subpart S that pertain to their respective job assignments, as well as any other electrically-related safety practices that are necessary for their safety.

For "unqualified persons" that don't directly perform electrical work, this level of training is sufficient. This category includes jobs like maintenance, janitorial, equipment operators, painters, and welders.

"Qualified persons" are employees that are permitted to work on or near exposed energized parts. OSHA requires this category of worker to undergo more extensive training on the specific topics laid out under §1910.332(b)(3). The industry standard is to also train qualified persons on the topics specified by NFPA 70E 110.2(A)(1).
