What is A Compliance Program in Healthcare?
Compliance programs are systems put in place by organizations and companies to protect against potential fraud, waste, and abuse of the healthcare system. This includes policies and procedures that enforce corrective actions as well as inform employees so that they are aware of how to avoid said corrective actions.
As the field of healthcare is diverse in its application, compliance programs are often unique from others by individual field as well as by state. A compliance program is a formalized system of policies, procedures, and processes developed and implemented to prevent, detect, and correct conduct that is inconsistent with applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations governing a healthcare organization.
What is the Purpose of Compliance Training in Healthcare?
In healthcare, clients and patients have important rights that they are entitled to, and which are very sensitive to being violated. There are also many regulations to put in place by local, state, and federal governments to protect citizens. Compliance training is implemented to provide a structure in a business to do so, and is adjusted as needed to maintain compliance. Some states don’t require compliance programs while others do, but having one protects against the risks of fraud and abuse.
What are the Main Areas of Healthcare Compliance?
There are seven main areas of healthcare compliance, as described by the HHS (Department of
Health and Human Services).
- Written Policies and Procedures
- Compliance Leadership and Oversight
- Training and Education
- Effective Lines of Communication with the Compliance officer and Disclosure Program
- Enforcing Standards
- Risk Assessment, Auditing, and Marketing
- Responding to Detected offenses and Corrective Action
These seven areas are designed to provide a roadmap for companies to ensure healthcare fraud, waste, and abuse are prevented before they occur and are corrected if they do occur.
How do You Train Employees for HIPAA Compliance?
The goal of HIPAA compliance training is to teach employees how to protect the health information of their patients. Training is often given to new employees as they are hired, and is given according to state and federal laws. As stated by the HHS, “The HIPAA Rules are flexible and scalable to accommodate the enormous range in types and sizes of entities that must comply with them.” Because this is the case it will.
