In 2020, even amidst a global pandemic, the number of designated active shooter events increased to 40, up 10 from 2019.

Run, Hide, Fight is the recommended response in the case of an active shooter event. The Department of Homeland Security recommends the following protocol when Run, Hide, Fight is necessary.

  1. Run
    • Plan an escape route
    • Do not bring belongings
    • Make sure your hands are visible
  2. Hide
    • Find a place outside of the shooter's view
    • Block the entry to a hiding place
    • Silence your mobile device
  3. Fight
    • Only fight as a last resort effort when your life is in imminent danger
    • Your goal in fight mode is to incapacitate the shooter
    • Throw items at the shooter and act aggressively

What is an "active shooter"?

According to the FBI, an active shooter is "an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area." Active shooter events can happen at schools, transportation centers, workplaces, houses of worship, communities, and other public gathering sites.

Active shooting events typically involve the use of firearms. There is often no choice or pattern in their selection of victims. Most active shooter situations occur within a 10 to 15-minute timeframe.

Because not all active shooter events involve a firearm, the following terms are also used to describe these violent events: active killer, active assailant, and violent intruder.
