Do I need to be certified to serve alcohol in California?

Yes. As per Assembly Bills 1221 and 82, effective July 1, 2022, any on-premise alcohol server and manager must be certified by an Authorized California Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Training Provider and pass the California Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) State Administered Exam no later than August 31, 2022, or within 60 days of initial employment.

All California ABC On-Premises Licensees have sixty (60) days from July 1, 2022, to have their staff trained and certified by an Authorized California Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Training Provider. This includes the successful completion of the California Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) State Administered Exam.
