How Do I Become a Certified Food Protection Manager in Wisconsin?

Get certified in food protection practices. Learn2Serve by 360training helps you meet Wisconsin requirements with our ANSI-accredited Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) exam. Sign up today to get certified!

What Are the Wisconsin Food Safety Regulations?

According to the Wisconsin Food Rule, most restaurants, mobile restaurants, temporary restaurants, and special organizations serving meals must have at least one manager or operator certified in food protection practices. If not the owner, then that person must be the designated “person-in-charge.”

Additionally, the food manager exam must be from an accredited program approved by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Once you pass your food manager exam you must submit your certificate of completion along with payment to apply for your official certification issued by the state.

To demonstrate that the person-in-charge meets these requirements, your state-issued certification must be displayed on-premises.

The ANSI-CFP Accredited Food Protection Manager Certification exam we offer at Learn2Serve by 360training is approved in Wisconsin and meets all of the state’s requirements.

How Long Is the Food Manager Certification Good For?

The Wisconsin Food Rule states that food managers must renew their certification every five years.

Can You Take the Wisconsin Food Manager Exam Online?

Yes, your exam will be administered through our online proctor service. The Learn2Serve Food Protection Manager Certification Exam is accredited by the American National Standards Institute and the Conference for Food Protection (ANSI-CFP).

What Does a Food Manager Do and How Can They Improve Food Safety?

Food managers have many different roles in retail food service establishments. This can include owners, executive chefs, general managers, food service managers, and more. But no matter what their official title is, food managers have a major impact on safety. They are responsible for:

  • Making sure employees understand how to handle food and prevent foodborne illness
  • Developing food safety policies and procedures for everyone to follow
  • Working with inspectors to answer questions
  • Managing food inventory and ensuring proper storage and cooking techniques
  • Ensuring employees maintain and clean and sanitary kitchen environment

Since they're accountable, food managers can make more money than servers and other food employees. According to wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, here is the average amount of money you can expect to make in senior management positions in the Wisconsin food service industry:

Job TitleAverage Hourly WageAverage Yearly Wage
Food Service Manager$24 $50,880
Chef$22.70 $47,210

Getting a Wisconsin-approved food safety manager certification could potentially put you ahead of someone who doesn’t have one when you are competing for one of these jobs.

Why Are Food Managers in Wisconsin Required To Get Accredited Certification?

Regulators in every state, including Wisconsin, are prioritizing food safety because foodborne illnesses are a continued issue. For instance data from the Center for Science in the Public Interest found that there were a total of 238 foodborne illness outbreaks over the 10-year period of 2003-2012. The two most common pathogens found were Norovirus and Salmonella—each of these is preventable when you have the right food safety protocols in place.

Certification through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Certified Food Protection Manager program is a way to ensure anyone in charge of food safety has the knowledge and tools that they need.

ANSI-accredited certification programs meet the highest standards in food safety. The ANSI CFPM program has been endorsed by both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
