Boom Lift

“Boom truck” usually refers to a truck-mounted crane. For construction work, OSHA requires that the operator be trained and evaluated under 29 CFR 1926.1427 unless the crane’s maximum rated capacity is 2,000 lb. or less. Some states and cities also require a separate operator license, so always check local rules.

Under the updated ANSI A92 MEWP system, boom lifts are Group B (the platform can extend beyond the tipping lines). Most self-propelled units that you drive from the platform are Type 3, so they’re typically classified as Group B, Type 3 (“3B”).

“AWP” is the older term. The standards now use the acronym MEWP, which stands for Mobile Elevating Work Platform. You should take training that aligns with current MEWP standards. For broad MEWP coverage or mixed fleets, take Aerial Lift (MEWP) Training; if you operate scissor lifts (Group A), complete Scissor Lift Online Training; and if you use boom lifts (Group B), choose Boom Lift Online Training.
