The Importance of Picking a Career You’ll Like

choosing a career

Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life. Sounds good, but you may find it difficult to determine what you want to do in your life and make a career of it.

Here are some guidelines that can help you make what you love to do a profitable career choice:

Determine what you are good at and what you love to do. Some people know what their passions are but most have difficulty rationalizing theirs’ or giving them form. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to pursue one goal to realize your passions. In fact, you can form to what you love by experimenting with different career choices.

The trick is to narrow down your aspirations into actions that can help you complete the steps you need to maintain a career you love. Break it down into manageable chunks and do an inventory of the skills you lack. Work on those skills and your aspirations will become clear with time.

You have no trouble working later hours. If you love what you do, the hours don’t matter and your eyes will not stay to that clock either. Putting in more time for something that makes your heart lighter and which is second nature to you makes the experience more enjoyable.

Discover what that is and stick to it. Plus, keep in mind that every industry has its own busy season so you will have to put in more time or work weekends to keep up. However, if you are doing what you love, those extra work days will not make a difference or dim your passion. That is better than slogging through a job you cannot stand.

Take money out of the equation. If you love what you do, money will be no object. For instance, if you love to travel and want to make a career out of it, the financial struggles will not phase you. That is not to say that you can ignore money completely – you have to eat don’t you? The difference will be that you will be happier with less and will not let financial pressures dictate how you live your life.

With patience and focus, your passionate aspirations will lead to financial stability but it might take more time than anticipated. If money is your motivator on the other hand, chances are you will forego what you love for a career you hate.

Meet with a career counselor. A career counselor who understands your passion in life can help you make a career out of it. That is what they do for a living and have the tools as well as the insight to help you determine the steps you need to take. This includes determining a career path that suits your passions. Rather than settling for the first one you find, narrow down ones you think will work with you rather than force you to settle for jobs you don’t like.

You will spend most of your life working to support yourself and make ends meet unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth. However, you will be living from paycheck to paycheck if you don’t choose a career that you love. Since you need to earn money to live, might as well earn it doing something you are passionate about.

Unfortunately, many individuals go about this the wrong way and end up accepting the cards life deals them. These are the ones who buckle and pick a career that pays the bills, but which doesn’t fulfill them. Yes it will take hard work, patience and some lean years, but the end result will be worth the struggles in the beginning. When you finally achieve your goals, the rest should be smooth sailing and you can move on to the next passion. Work doesn’t have to be something you hate. Staying true to yourself is key.
