About This Course

This MSHA Part 46 8-Hour Surface Mining Refresher course provides fundamental training to experienced surface miners, ensuring they stay up-to-date with current safety protocols and hazard prevention. This course covers crucial topics such as identifying common causes of mining injuries and fatalities, understanding health and safety standards, proper equipment handling, and safety measures for working with electricity and explosives. Additionally, it addresses regulations for safe materials handling, chemical exposure, and atmospheric hazards like dust and noise.  

Designed for surface miners with at least one year of experience, this course also caters to a variety of individuals on mining sites, including office staff, contractors, and visitors.  

Each mining operation has a unique, MSHA-approved training plan tailored to its specific requirements and operational standards. In combination with our other MSHA refresher online courses, this 8-hour program can be used as part of a company’s MSHA-approved training plan to fulfill annual refresher requirements for 30 CFR 46.8. While our courses are designed to support Part 46 annual refresher training, applicability may vary depending on individual training plans. It is the responsibility of your mine site operator to ensure compliance with MSHA regulations and verify that all employees receive the training specified in their approved plan.

Who Needs MSHA Part 46 8-Hour Surface Mining Refresher Certification?

This course is designed for experienced surface miners with at least one year of experience in various mining operations, including those involved in sand and gravel, surface stone, clay, phosphate, limestone, marble, shale, kaolin, feldspar, granite, traprock, cement, lime, sandstone, and slate mining.  

While primarily intended for miners, the training is also recommended for office staff, delivery workers, customers, independent contractors, maintenance personnel, and visitors.

How Long Does MSHA Part 46 8-Hour Surface Mining Refresher Certification Last?

Miners must receive a minimum of 8 hours of annual refresher training to remain compliant with MSHA regulations. This training is essential to ensure that miners are up-to-date on the latest safety practices and procedures relevant to their specific mining operation. 

The MSHA standard requiring annual refresher training is 30 CFR 46.8. This regulation outlines the specific requirements for refresher training, including the minimum hours required and the topics that must be covered.

How Long Can I Access My MSHA Part 46 8-Hour Surface Mining Refresher Course Materials?

Learners have 60 days from the date of enrollment to complete the course and final assessment. For online purchases, this starts on the date of purchase. During this time, they can log out and back in to return to where they left off in the course. The only exception is the final exam, which must be completed in a single sitting.

Be aware that there are two dates in the system: a due date and an expiration date. If an administrator purchases the course, they can assign a due date, which can be earlier than the expiration date.
