You have the right to feel safe at work. That’s why the federal government created the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, also known as OSHA. The agency aims to ensure your working conditions remain safe and secure. To do this, OSHA develops health and safety training requirements that inform you about the various hazards you might face so that you can prevent accidents and injuries.

What's the Purpose of OSHA Training?

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration, or OSHA, was established by the federal government to ensure all employees have a safe and secure work environment. To do this, OSHA created health and safety training requirements to educate employees on potential risks and reduce the likelihood of on-the-job accidents and injuries.

What Should I Expect from OSHA Training?

OSHA safety training is crucial for workers in risky industries like manufacturing, oil and gas, construction, healthcare, and agriculture, as these industries have specific OSHA regulations covering potential dangers.

OSHA mandates that employers offer employees comprehensive information and training on hazardous conditions in their work area, starting with their initial assignment and addressing new hazards as they arise. This can be customized to specific dangers or substances, and labels and safety data sheets should be readily available for job-specific information. There is a heightened chance of workplace accidents or death if no employees have received OSHA training. As a result, it is critical to guarantee that employees receive in-depth training to work in the safest manner possible.

For example, OSHA's Focus Four—falls, caught in or between, struck by, and electrocution—is an example of a specific risk in the construction business. OSHA 10-Hour construction and OSHA 30-Hour construction training include these risks. Since workers must know how to safely operate their daily equipment, they are also covered in numerous heavy equipment construction training OSHA courses.

What are OSHA Training Requirements?

Many OSHA standards include specific training requirements for safety and health to ensure that employees have the skills and knowledge needed to do their jobs safely. These requirements are consistent with OSHA's belief that training is essential to any employer's safety and health program for protecting employees from accidents and illnesses. OSHA mandates employee training on duties, circumstances, and equipment for all industries, delivered by qualified individuals in a clear and understandable manner.

What are OSHA DOL Cards?

An OSHA Card is a wallet-sized card that shows you have finished one of OSHA's 10-hour or 30-hour safety training courses. You receive these cards after finishing one of the classes based on the industry you work in from OSHA-approved trainers. Construction, maritime, and general industry training cards are available from OSHA in 10-hour and 30-hour formats.

How Do I Earn My OSHA Card?

Upon completing an OSHA course, individuals receive an OSHA DOL card, specifically for OSHA 10 and 30 training courses. OSHA does not offer a certification for these courses, so the DOL card verifies that you passed the OSHA course and is provided.

To get an official OSHA DOL card, you must:

  • Enroll in an OSHA Outreach course
  • Finish your training online or in person
  • Pass the final examination

When you pass the exam, you’ll get a certificate of completion to print or save as immediate proof. Your official OSHA card will be delivered within two to three weeks.

Additionally, the OSHA 10-Hour Construction, OSHA 10-Hour General IndustryOSHA 30-Hour Construction, and OSHA 30-Hour General Industry courses can only be taught by authorized trainers, like OSHAcampus® by 360training, who can also issue the DOL cards. On the other hand, if you finish safety training in confined spaces, HAZWOPER, HazCom, and other areas regulated by OSHA regulations, you'll receive a certificate that you can print.

How Long Do OSHA DOL Cards Last?

DOL cards have no expiration date set by OSHA. Those who require an OSHA DOL card, like as employers or state and local governments, will typically specify how frequently the training must be renewed.

Who Needs OSHA DOL Cards?

DOL cards do not certify employees for work but rather prove they have taken a course on workplace hazards and safety measures to prevent injury and death.

Employers decide if a DOL card is necessary. Entry-level construction employees are typically required to take an OSHA 10 Construction course due to the high risk of hazards in the industry. Other workplaces with serious hazards, like factories, may require an OSHA 10 General Industry course for non-supervisory employees.

If you need to take OSHA 10 or 30 as a job requirement, there's a strong likelihood that you'll be required to carry your DOL card while on the job site. As a result of this common requirement, the U.S. Department of Labor changed the design of the card several years ago from paper to a durable plastic card that fits in a wallet.
