About this Course
What is Fall Protection Training?
With scaffolding, ladders, tall buildings, and cranes, falls on construction sites are extremely common. In fact, OSHA states that falls are the most common cause of death and injury on a construction site. Fall protection involves using controls to prevent or stop personnel from falling.
Our Fall Protection Training provides you with the information you need to protect yourself and your fellow workers from the safety hazards that lead to falls. Our course covers the importance of fall protection on construction sites, including the use of personal fall arrest devices, safety net systems, and guardrails.
It also covers the process of inspecting fall protective gear. The course will teach workers how to identify potential hazards, develop an effective safety plan, and select appropriate safety measures. You’ll learn fall protection standards and definitions, including the differences between prevention, restraint, and arrest.
The course also reviews common hazards and rescue responses, so you understand what will happen and the proper actions to take if you were to fall on a construction site. Once you complete the course, you’ll be compliant with OSHA training regulations.
What is the OSHA Requirement for Fall Protection Training?
OSHA requires companies to train all employees who may experience a fall hazard. This standard applies to employees who are required to wear personal protection equipment or similar devices. Falls are a leading cause of fatal and serious workplace injuries. Employers are required by OSHA to:
- Offer working environments free from recognized hazards
- Maintain clean and dry floors in work areas
- Supply personal protective equipment to employees
- Train staff members about workplace hazards in a language they understand
Employers can further avoid accidents by emphasizing preventative actions such as hazard assessment and establishing a fall protection strategy. Anchorage locations should be given special consideration, as should ensuring that workers who use personal fall protection devices understand how to use them.
How Often is Fall Protection Training Required?
To keep their certification current, employees must take a refresher course every two years. When new employees are hired without the proper training, additional training is obviously required. When new staff members are added to the team or the worksite changes in any way, new training is also required.
Who Should Take Fall Protection Training?
All construction personnel covered by OSHA's fall protection standards must take fall protection training.
That includes workers, supervisors, and managers that work near or supervise any area that requires fall protection: leading-edge work, hoist areas, formwork, rebar, walkways, excavations, roofing activities, and wall openings.
Workers who inspect, investigate or assess job sites prior to the actual start of work are exempt from OSHA fall protection standards.
Note: OSHA has a separate set of standards for General Industry (non-construction workplaces). This course does NOT satisfy training requirements for non-construction workplaces.
